John loved his long-term girlfriend, Chelsea Cross. He had been dating her for three years and had just started considering marriage. He could’ve proposed earlier, but he had been scared. He hadn’t been afraid that she would refuse to marry him. He was afraid that her dad wouldn’t give him his blessing. These days, you don’t need to ask your girlfriend’s father for permission, but John knew it was the right thing to do and he also knew that her father would appreciate it, but that doesn’t mean he would give John his blessing.
While Chelsea was at work, John went over to her parents’ house and talked with Mr. Cross in his private office. Mr. Cross sat behind his desk, arms folded, staring at John, who was a little intimidated by the look he was getting.
“What can I do for you, John?” Mr. Cross said.
“I wanted to ask for your blessing to marry your daughter.”
Mr. Cross narrowed his eyes, making John uncomfortable. “Why do you want to marry my daughter?”
John took a deep breath. “I love her. I want to spend the rest of my life with her. Chelsea is wonderful and she probably deserves better than me, but I know I can make her happy.”
“Why did it take you so long to ask?”
“To tell you the truth, Sir, I was afraid. I was afraid that she would turn me down or you wouldn’t give me your blessing.”
“But you’re not afraid now?”
“Of course I am, but I love your daughter and I want to be with her forever.”
After a long silence, John hung his head and stood up. “Sorry to waste your time, Sir.”
He left the office.
“How’d it go?” Chris Hopkins asked.
“He didn’t give me his blessing. I can’t marry Chelsea.”
“Bro, you can still marry her. You don’t need to ask her father’s permission. She is an adult and can make her own decisions.”
His brother didn’t get it. Asking the father’s permission before marrying his daughter was the polite thing to do and John was always polite.
He was broken up over this because it meant he would have to break up with Chelsea. He wouldn’t waste anymore of her time if he couldn’t marry her. She deserved to find someone who could marry her.
His brother was still talking, but John didn’t pay attention. He was thinking about Chelsea and he could feel his eyes water. He loved her and didn’t want to give her up.
Chris stopped talking and left the room. He was probably mad because John wasn’t paying attention to him.
He was pulled back to earth when the phone rang. The caller ID had his girlfriend’s phone number on it. He answered it on the third ring, preparing to break up with her, and was surprised to hear Mr. Cross’ voice on the other end.
“Congratulations, John Hopkins, you’re going to be a married man.”
John was speechless. Does that mean that Mr. Cross was giving him permission to marry Chelsea? He was excited but had to play it cool while talking to Mr. Cross.
“Thank you, Mr. Cross.”
They hung up and John jumped up and down, screaming ‘YES!’
That Friday, John had a date with Chelsea. He had been saving up all his money for this night. He took Chelsea to an expensive restaurant and waited until after they were done eating to get down on one knee in front of her and asked for her hand in marriage.
The restaurant went deathly silent, everybody was staring at them. They seemed to be holding there breath. Tears started down Chelsea’s cheeks and she was smiling, proving that they were tears of joy.
“Yes.”
The restaurant burst out clapping and the waiter brought them a bottle of wine, on the house. Everybody was getting up and going over to them, congratulating them. The pianist also started playing a slow love song and they got up to dance.
Planning a wedding is a pain that John and Chelsea were starting to realize. They couldn’t agree on anything, which was unusual for them. They had never disagreed on anything before. Their first fight was over what food they should serve at the wedding. They wondered how other engaged couples put up with it.
She chose a dress pretty quickly and John got his tux the same time Chris got his, which was about a month before the wedding. She had her dress two weeks after he proposed and gave him a hard time for waiting so long.
Finally it was the wedding day. The happiest days of their lives. They got to the church everywhere and John was planning on things going wrong, but surprisingly nothing went wrong.
The wedding started on time and everybody they invited was there. Chris was John’s best man and Chelsea’s maid of Honor was her cousin, Sarah.
During the reception, everybody was hugging and kissing them and telling them congratulations. They had a hard time getting to their table to eat dinner.
They had just got done eating dinner when it was time for their first dance as husband and wife. Everybody gathered around to see them dance. He could see her parents smiling and his brother was the happiest John had ever seen him. Chris was the only family member he had, but he had invited his friends. His party was pretty small compared to her party.
Their honeymoon was in Paris, France. They had the time of their lives and agreed to go back when they had their second honeymoon in ten years, after they renewed their wedding vows.
A year later, they had their first child, a boy named Vincent Charles Hopkins. They named him after her father. By their ten year anniversary, they had two kids, but they still renewed their wedding vows and went to France, leaving the kids with Chris and his wife.
